The other day while picking my daughter up from school, I was chatting with another parent and they asked me…
what do you do for a living?
I replied with my typical canned response, “I do production for live events…we do the audio, video, lighting and all that fun stuff.” The other parent replied…
cool…what a fun thing to do for a living.
Later that night, I couldn’t stop thinking about this. They were right, it truly is a fun thing to do for a living. When I was a kid watching awards shows on T.V. or going to concerts, I remember being amazed by the overall scope of these shows and wondering how it all worked. Fast forward a few decades and I now live within that scope and do indeed love it.
Over the last 20 years, I have actually been paid to see some of the most amazing places in the world; places I would have never imagined visiting let alone working in (Moscow & Panama for example). As if that isn’t enough, I have had the great fortune to work with some of the most talented people on the planet…people I can honestly say I consider my family. Alongside these friends/co-workers I get to be a part of the world I watched as a kid. I love the fact I still get excited when I wake up the morning of a show and get to see what we all created together. And did I mention…this is my “job.”
So, while I answered the other parent with a fairly cookie cutter response…I consider what I do for a living to be anything but cookie cutter. They were definitely right…it is a fun thing to do for a living.
